1. J. Cardoso, The Semantic Web Vision: Where Are We?, Intelligent Systems, IEEE, Volume 22, Issue 5, September-October 2007, pages 84-88.

This article by professor at the University of Madeira describes based on surveys conducted by the author what are the latest trends among people who use ontologies in their research, work etc. According to the survey, the respondents use ontologies generally to make certain domain models and knowledge understandable to human-beings as well as computers. The author comes to the conclusion that Semantic Web is becoming mainstream and that Web 3.0 can provide a new class of applications compared to Web 2.0, and the gap between Web 3.0 and 2.0 would be just as one between the latter and Web 1.0.

2. H. Kato, K.T. Tan, Pervasive 2D Barcodes for Camera Phone Applications, IEEE Pervasive Computing, Volume 6, Issue 4, October-December 2007, Pages 76-85

In the article the authors compare and evaluate six 2D barcodes. The study is based on previous one where six barcodes were evaluated by 8 different criteria and focuses on using of additional metric first-read rate to verify the results that were achieved in previous study.

3. I. Horrocks, Ontologies and the semantic web, Communications of the ACM, Volume 51, Issue 12, December 2008, Pages 58-67

In this work the description of process of providing semantics by ontologies is explained in a simple way.

4. M.M. Gurvich, Y.N. Liaschenko, Diet Therapy. Complete reference book. Moscow: Eksmo, 2009. [rus]

This book by two experts in dietology describes the modern diet therapy which is applied in cases of digestive organs or cardiovascular system illnesses, diabetes and allergies. It lists different diets, including the Pevzner classification. It also has some useful recipes as well. The language is easily understood by non-professional doctors, the terms used in the book are explained and contains many practical advises.

Reflection

I’m working on development of a software-product that will speed up and make easier the shopping process for people looking for specific products that suit the requirements of a specific diet. I found out that there are actually no products that fulfill that task. The The majority of applications tend to focus on healthy diets, that are usually just people’s choice or doctor’s recommendation to follow, but they don’t focus on diets that are the must after certain illnesses. Developing such kind of a product will help people to buy the right type of good in shorter periods of time. Because they would not need to care about finding information on a specific diet, they just make a photo of a bar code and the PDA tells whether this product is suitable for chosen diet or not.
It would be useful and quite critical to know the people’s opinion on such product as well as to find out about the existing diets outside post-soviet countries.
Actually for me the difficult part was to come up with an idea, but talking about this particular idea it is to to outline the goals that should be so achieved in the first place.
As a student , I think that my biggest achievement was think and write down the idea with all groundings.

The idea

FIRST of all it would be good to write down my topic and it goes like this (at this stage):  Creating a mobile app that will help to choose appropriate food for specific diet.

THIS diet is not the one that helps to alter weight or something like that. It’s therapeutic diet, such diets are assigned to patients after certain illnesses.

THE idea first time came to my mind back in Ukraine when I just got out of the hospital. In post-soviet coutries a classification of healthy diets, proposed by M.Pevzner (one of the founders of dietology and clinic gastroenterology in USSR) is used in hospitals. According to this classification there are 15 tables. Each table corresponds to a number of deseases and for each one there is special food listed that should be taken and the one that should be avoid. E.g. table 3 is for those, who suffer from chronic bowel diseases with constipation during not sharp or fading  exacerbation or beyond it (a little hard to translate medical terms). People who had been assigned table 3 can eat a number of products (I don’t think that it’s necessary to put the list here, but those products are listed in description of table 3), but they should avoid eating …(and once again a list of products). Although I didn’t yet find any analogues to this classification in the European medicine, I think, that adapting this table to Europeans would also be another benefit.

TO make a long story shirt, my idea is to create an app, that would scan the bar code of the product using the phone’s camera, check information about it in the Internet and tell you whether this product is suitable for specific diet table or not. It would also contain general information and recommendations on every diet.

IN cooperation with big supermarkets (like S-Market in Finland, for example), this product can work with the supermarkets database in order to check the availability of the product in the nearest S-Market (or Prisma) to the user.

MOREOVER, it could be expanded to include even prices on this products and effective discounts.

ONTOLOGIES could be used for sorting new products. New means the ones that are not in database, however to fill the database for the first time and create the ontology dietitians and nutrition experts will be needed. Or there could be different approach. Given that there is a created ontology the usage of database could be avoided. After scanning the bar code the program will go on-line to check the composition of the product and using the ontology it could define whether it is suitable for a chosen type of diet or no.

Paraphrasing Marlen’s Philosophy

In the classroom, I employ a humanizing, student-centered pedagogy where all learners’ voices are valid, and where practice, exploration and reflection are more important than perfection. I combine my years of experience in the fields of mental health and as an international traveler to create a learning environment that honors the diversity of learner abilities and identities.(C) Marlen Harrison

Dr.Harrison’s philosophy is to use such pedagogy methods where teacher hears and listens to every student on equal basis. And the attitude, the efforts students make are more important than the results that they achieve. He combines experience that he has in mental health with experience he got from travelling around the globe in order to make an atmosphere in the classroom with respect to eachone’s personalities and abilities. (C)2011 Andrii Gontarenko

To make long story short:

The teaching philosophy lies in combination of Dr.Harrison’s experience both from travelling and mental health to hear and listen to every student on equal basis and to make students feel it. (C) 2011 Andrii Gontarenko&Mariia Gavriushenko
